Charlie was dropped off at the Berkeley Animal Shelter by someone who initially stated that they “found him.” Then it was discovered that person actually had the dog for a couple of months, so it was treated as an “owner surrender.”
He has no real use of his back legs. They were froze/locked in a rigid position, so he used them to steady his back end, but he wasn’t able to actually move them in any useful way. X-rays of his spine showed a major deformity that he was likely born with. The shelter didn’t have the resources to care for this kind of disability. They called us before making the decision to euthanize him.
We have determined that Charlie is incontinent (bowels and bladder) due to his condition. He mostly gets around by dragging his hind legs, and occasionally using his legs as “crutches”. The foster family hasn’t done a lot of work on getting him to use a wheelchair/cart.
As a puppy he is very playful. He had to learn a lot of puppy manners while interacting with the other dogs in the home. He is doing pretty well in that area. Charlie would do well in a home with other friendly, playful dogs his size.
Please note that we don’t adopt any of our dogs out to homes with children under the age of 13.
